GETTING OUR HANDS DIRTY!

As an introduction to our new spring topic on 'Water and Africa', the children enjoyed getting their hands dirty during our scientific experiment on filtering.

The challenge was to make a filter, using a variety of materials, that made dirty water as clear as possible. The children developed their scientific skills of observation, questioning and drawing conclusions.

The children have been working hard at improving their descriptive writing skills. This week they have studied how to write an excellent character description, using characters from 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe'.
Here is Nicole's fantastic piece of work:

I stared at the mythical creature standing nervously in front of me. His legs were goat's legs which were covered in glossy, black hair and were as dark as the night. Above his strange goat's legs, the mythical creature, which I was sure was a faun, had a human torso. His chapped lips, which were as red as rosies, quivered with shyness. His piercing, sky-blue eyes were darting around furtively, always on the look out. Stroking his short faun goatie, which was as pointy as a needle, he wondered what I was. Then he started fiddling with his curly, brown hair. When this animal thinks, his tail swishes around playfully. This weird, melancholic creature's name was Mr Tumnus.

INVESTIGATING BRIDGES.

Y5G learnt all about the forces related to bridge-building and investigated the strength of different shapes.

A Trip Back In Time

Y5G went to the Drama Centre to learn all about Victorian Life. We acted out all the different jobs that Victorian workers had to do. Some of us were Rat Catchers, Rose Sellers, Chimney Sweeps and Factory Workers.

Johnny, who works at the Drama Centre, was fantastic!!! He pretended to own a clothes factory that we all had to work in, we acted out how the machines would work and even got a special visit from Queen Victoria (an Oscar worthy performance from Mrs Gibb).

In the end we all wanted to go on strike as the conditions that the Victorian Factory Workers lived in were horrible, working all day long for very little pay.

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the Drama Centre and can't wait to go back again!!!

Year 5 have been making the most of the great weather by playing lots of maths games in the sunshine.

We've played multiplication relay, place value running games and times table SPLAT!!!

Hopefully the Sun will stay out and we can have even more outdoor fun during our maths lessons.

During Arts Week we were given a Shakespeare Challenge by visiting children from Chingford School. The class all wrote rhyming couplets and some children worked at role plays.

The children showed great focus and co-operation when creating their witch puppets. First we studied how to make a rod puppet and then worked in small groups to apply this to creating some spooky witches.

Our class showed the great variety of skills and knowledge that we have all been learning about during this school year. The fun-packed assembly was full of singing, rapping, dancing, poetry reading and lots, lots more. What a creative group of children!

Our class enjoyed the maths shape-work undertaken this week. The challenge was to build a model by folding the nets of shapes into cubes, cuboids, pyramids, tetrahedrons, cylinders, etc.

Our class showed some great musical composition skills, when creating a piece of music that represented the watercycle. It was a fun way to learn about science.

One of our scientific activities, linked with our topic on Water and Africa, was to learn about the process of filtering by trying to make very dirty water clean.
The children had great fun trying out different filters and eventually several groups managed to produce some quite clear water. Well done, children.

Science investigation

We have been learning about the different components of carrying out a science experiment.

Floating and sinking science investigation.

At first we planned our experiment to ensure that it would a "fair test". We needed two pieces of foil, some cubes and a small tub of water.

We tested how many cubes could be held on a flat piece of foil. We then investigated other shapes to see which would hold the most cubes.

Parking Around the School

As part of our Community Safety Focus we have been learning about how important it is to park safely around the school. All the pupils are encouraged to walk to school - because exercise is good for you. So it is extra important that if you come to school by car you remind your parents to be extra, extra careful how fast they drive near the school and where they park. If you do have to come by car why not park a little further away, that way you will make the area around the school safer and you will get some exercise at the same time!

Volcanoes

This term we have been learning about volcanoes. A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock, called magma, below the surface of the Earth. It is a hole in the Earth from which molten rock and gas erupts. The name volcano has its origin from the name of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire.

We got to make models out of paper of volcanoes and some of us even drew pictures of volcanoes we'd seen in books and on the internet. Looks pretty hot!

Macbeth

Last term we were learning about William Shakespeare the "Bard of Avon". Shakespeare was a great poet and playwright who wrote many famous works. One of his most famous play's was Macbeth. We watched a film about Macbeth, then acted out some scenes from Macbeth and wrote some poems of our own. Anything Shakespeare can do 5G can do just as well!

St. Pauls Church

On Friday, 12th March 2010 we visited St.Pauls Church to see the Life Exhibition. The Life Exhibition is a multi-media experience which focuses on the life of Jesus and aims to:
- help visitors understand what Christians believe about Jesus
- enable questioning and exploring of the life of Jesus
- encourage visitors to consider his impact in today's world
- allow visitors to think for themselves abou the teachings of Jesus
- build on existing links between schools and local churches

It was a fantastic day and everyone loved the interactive tools and technological approach to learning.

Parents Assembly

On the 24th of February at our Parents Assembly we did a short presentation of all that we have been learning this past half term.

There were lots of raps about saving water. We like rap! There were lots of singing about recycling water. We like singing!! Best of all there were lots of dancing about washing properly and keeping clean. We like dancing!!! Can you spot who jumped the highest!!!!

Water Recycling

Every Drop Counts: During this term we have been learning about how to save water as part of our Water & Africa project. We discovered how lucky we are to be able to turn on a tap and have water. We had a visitor – Michelle – who told us all about how to collect water using everyday objects. In groups, with Michelle’s help, we designed and built our own gadgets for collecting water. As you can see some are so good that we’ll soon be turning off quite a few taps at John Bramston!

Healthy Eating

During the week of the 11th January 2010 we've all been learning about eating healthily. Why? Because a healthy body, means a healthy mind, and that means a happy and healthy ME! We made cards, charts and food pyramids of the sorts of foods you should eat to keep healthy. Panto Time

This month we had a visit from the East 15 Acting School, based at the University of Essex. We saw a performance of the Snow Queen. It is a famous story by Hans Christian Anderson that is all about friendship and the triumph of love over wickedness. We enjoyed the pantomime so much that we decided to dress up as our favourite pantomime characters. Watch out East 15, here comes John Bramston!

Victorian Models

This month we have been learning about Victorian Inventions. We came up with ideas for inventions that the Victorians would have liked and had to sell our ideas in our own Dragons Den. The really cool ones got money from the Dragons to make up our ideas. Here is a selection of the models that we produced with money from the Dragons, just in time for your Christmas stockings!

Forces Week

During the week of the 9th November 2009 we have been learning about “forces”. We watched a film about the Tacoma Narrows Bridge that collapsed in America in 1940 because the engineers didn’t think about all the forces on the bridge girders. Working in groups we tested three different designs for a good bridge girder, we then made and tested the designs using weights to discover the best girder. Some of our bridges girders will last longer than the Tacoma Narrows Bridge, don’t you agree!

Victorian Inventions

During the week of the 2nd November 2009 we have been learning about Victorian inventions. We divided into teams and came up lots of ideas for inventions that would make life easier for everyone. Then we presented our ideas in our very own Dragon’s Den and had to persuade the Dragon’s to give us some money to make our inventions. We had a great time but it was hard work persuading the Dragons to give us some money.

On Friday, 6th November 2009 we gave a short presentation at the Parent’s Assembly about what we had learnt. Don’t you think our Dragon’s look fierce, grrr!

Parents Assembly - PE Time

Our theme for the parents’ assembly on Friday 16th October 2009 was PE. We chose PE because it’s important to be healthy so that you can do well at school. We formed a group of boys and a group of girls to perform some gymnastics for everyone. It went really well and everyone got to see how good we were at running, jumping and doing tumbles!

Shapes Week

During the week of the 12th October 2009 we have been studying shapes in maths. In particular we have been learning about hexominoes, which is a bit like dominoes but each “piece” has six squares, instead of two squares. We have been learning about in how many ways you can arrange the six squares, as you can see from the pictures we came up with quite a few different ones.

There is no known math formula for working out how many ways you can arrange a hexomino but after a lot of effort we managed to find 35. What do you think? Are there any others, let us know if you can find more!

David Beckham Academy

On 1st October 2009 we went the David Beckham Academy in Greenwich, next to the "Dome". There is only one other David Beckham Academy in the World and that one is in Los Angles, USA.

The academy is the largest sporting facility of its kind in Europe and it was pretty massive from the inside too!

There were a lot of other children there, and we were split into teams representing different footballing countries and got to play each other. As usual Germany won!

Afterwards we went indoors and there were a lot of footballing memorabilia from all the great footballers on the walls. We played some football board games about how to plan a game, what to do during the game and lots of us won medals afterwards.

The best part was at the end when they opened the canteen and we all got to eat like footballers. Lots and lots!

Parents Assembly

On Monday, 14th September 2009 the Victorian School Inspector visited our class. Everyone dressed up in their Victorian costumes and we all had a smashing time. The Victorian School Inspector was a bit scary, see the video and let us know if you agree!

Making Bags

This afternoon we had visitors from a recycling company. They talked to us about how important it is to recycle and how best we can do it. We then made bags out out of old pillow cases and decorated them by designing and creating pictures related to our natural world. We produced some amazing bags, very unique and very usable!

Gamelan

We had a wonderful afternoon at the music centre playing the Gamelan percussion instruments. They are traditional Indonesian instruments played together by a group of musicians. we spilt into two groups to perform a tune. The sound was amazing!

To coincide with Book Week we visited the Redbridge Drama Centre. The children had a fantastic time carrying out lots of drama activities related to our science topic, 'Space and the Solar System'. Firefighter Visit

On Wednesday 28th January we had a visit from Paul, a firefighter from Ilford Fire Station. In a very entertaining way he gave a talk on fire safety and how we should be protecting our homes. The children absoloutely loved the visit and were keen to ask lots of questions. At the end Paul gave everyone a checklist of things we should know about and have in our homes in the event of a fire.

So remember 5E to go through this checklist with your parents to ensure you have a safe home!

The Victorian School Inspector

On Wednesday Y5 had a Victorian day ,we did a lot of Victorian activities, such as sewing. After lunch, we had a special visitor from the Redbridge drama centre. He made us do a mental arithmetic test,taught us how they sang the ABC,gave us a spelling test and answered any questions we wanted to know. We found out information about Victorian children at work like: cleaning the chimneys, working in the coal mines and working in factories. One of the children got caught talking and got the cane! We really enjoyed ourselves, it was great fun and we really got the feel of being a Victorian child.

Library Visit

On Thursday 27th November Year 5 visited the local library to take part in a story telling session. It was great fun and we all participated, children and teachers were given the opportunity to be characters in the story. We learnt how much fun telling stories together can be. We can't wait to go again!

Thinking about feelings
