Year 5 Police Safety Talk

On Friday 25th January, Year 5 were visited by a local police officer who talked to the children about keeping safe in their local area. He talked to the children about the danger of Gangs. How they recruit children (some as young as 10 yrs) into gangs and the signs to be aware of.

Children were able to ask and answer questions they had and were well informed about what they could do to keep themselves safe and the consequences of being part of a gang.
The police officer talked to the children about gangs. As a year group, the children discussed reasons why young people may join a gang, for example:
  • ·         Respect and status
  • ·         To gain friends
  • ·         A sense of belonging
  • ·         Excitement
  • ·         To find a substitute family
  • ·         Power
  • ·         Protection
  • ·         Money
  • ·         Peer pressure

The children were encouraged to remember that they have the power to say “No” if someone asks them to do something that makes them feel uncomfortable. They were also informed of the dangers linked to social media and how to keep themselves safe.
